Tomas Jaramillo Pleads Guilty to VAMC Scam

An Albuquerque man has pleaded guilty to submitting false and fraudulent claims to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Albuquerque.

Tomas Jaramillo, 55, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was charged with submitting fraudulent vouchers to collect payments for roundtrip travel to attend medical appointments.

According to court documents, Jaramillo travelled to the VAMC in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, to obtain medical treatment and falsely claimed that he traveled from Socorro, New Mexico, to do so.

Between June 2009 and July 2010, Jaramillo submitted 173 fraudulent claims to the VAMC for travel beneficiary payments.

As a result of his actions, Jaramillo received $11,439.90 in travel reimbursements to which he was not entitled.

On August 18, 2015, Jaramillo was charged by information with submitting fraudulent vouchers. On September 22, 2015, he was subsequently charged by indictment with the 173 fraudulent claims.

Under the terms of his plea agreement, Jaramillo will be sentenced to five years of probation and will be ordered to pay $11,439.90 in restitution to the VAMC.

This case was investigated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, Criminal Investigation Division, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel A. Hurtado.
