Tony Holmes, Family Dollar Robberies, Tennessee 2018
A Memphis man's violent crime spree ended with a 20-year federal prison sentence for robbing two Family Dollar locations.
Tony Holmes, 24, committed the two armed robberies affecting interstate commerce on September 20, 2016 within three hours. Multiple customers and employees were present at each store when Holmes used a sawed-off shotgun to rob the stores.
The violent crime rate in Memphis is unacceptably high, said U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant for the Western District of Tennessee. Business owners have a fundamental right to be safe from armed robbers who terrorize our communities with lawlessness.
Holmes pleaded guilty on March 1, 2018 to two counts of robbery affecting interstate commerce and one count of brandishing a short-barreled shotgun during a crime of violence.
On May 24, 2018, U.S. District Judge John T. Fowlkes Jr. sentenced Holmes to 20 years imprisonment and five years supervised release to begin after incarceration.
The Safe Streets Task Force investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Rogers prosecuting on the government's behalf.
The defendant's sentence sends a clear message that there will be a real and significant consequence for such violence, and the government will no longer allow gun crime to rule the streets.
