Tony McGillen, Bank Robbery, Michigan 2024
A chilling armed robbery shook the community of Essexville, Michigan, when Tony McGillen, 45, stormed into the Sunrise Family Credit Union at gunpoint on April 9, 2024.
McGillen, a Bay City resident, threatened multiple tellers and made off with $7,901 in cash. This brazen crime led to a swift response from the FBI in Bay City, who identified McGillen with the help of tips from the community.
Thanks to the diligent work of the FBI Bay City Resident Agency, in partnership with the Hampton Township Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and the successful prosecution by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, McGillen was arrested just over two weeks later.
U.S. District Court Judge Thomas L. Ludington has imposed a harsh sentence on McGillen, who pleaded guilty to bank robbery and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. McGillen will serve 152 months in federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney William Orr, and the investigation was conducted by the Bay City Resident Agency of the FBI.
