Torrey Griffin, Possessing Contraband in a Prison, Louisiana 2017

A 27-year-old man from Opelousas, Louisiana, is headed to prison after being caught with an improvised knife at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, Louisiana. Torrey Griffin, 27, of Opelousas, was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison for possessing contraband in a prison.

The U.S. Attorney David C. Joseph announced the sentencing of Griffin last week. Griffin was also sentenced to one year of supervised release as part of the sentence.

According to the January 19, 2018 guilty plea, Griffin was searched at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, Louisiana, on July 30, 2017. A prison guard discovered that Griffin could not clear the metal detector, and during a pat down, the guard removed a knife from Griffin’s pants. The knife was approximately 6 and a half inches long and made of metal sharpened on one end.

The FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Prisons-Special Investigative Services conducted the investigation into the incident. Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Ayo prosecuted the case.

The incident highlights the ongoing issue of contraband in federal prisons. Prisons have implemented various measures to prevent the introduction of contraband, but it remains a persistent problem.
