Rapid City Man Sentenced for Illegal Possession of Ammunition

RAPID CITY - In a significant blow to the community's war on gun violence, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken has handed down a stiff sentence to a local man found guilty of possessing ammunition as a prohibited person.

Travis Maho, a 34-year-old Rapid City resident and convicted felon, was sentenced to five years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Maho's crime dates back to June 2022, when he was found in possession of 7.62x54 caliber, .32 caliber, and .45 Auto caliber ammunition. This was a brazen act, considering his status as a previously convicted felon, who is strictly prohibited from owning or possessing firearms and ammunition.

What's more, law enforcement discovered distributable quantities of methamphetamine during their investigation, further exacerbating the severity of Maho's crime.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused enforcement priorities.

This case was a collaborative effort, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Rapid City Police Department working together to bring Maho to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.

As a result of this conviction, Maho was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
