Assault on Reservation Leaves Woman with Severe Lacerations
A disturbing act of violence in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, resulted in severe injuries to a woman and has landed the perpetrator, Trevin Antonio, behind bars. The 29-year-old man was sentenced to three years and six months in federal prison for his role in the assault.
The crime occurred on July 31, 2025, within the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation. According to reports, Antonio assaulted a woman with a weapon, leaving her with severe lacerations to her face that required hospitalization.
This case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office due to the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute that mandates certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court instead of state court.
After being indicted in October 2025, Antonio pleaded guilty on April 9, 2026. The U.S. Attorney's Office, with the assistance of the FBI and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, worked tirelessly to bring Antonio to justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen prosecuted the case, resulting in Antonio's conviction and sentencing. The defendant was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
