Rapid City Man Sentenced for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender
A Rapid City, South Dakota, man was sentenced for failure to register as a sex offender. Troy Sampson, 42, was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender and was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release.
The sentence was handed down by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, on March 25, 2020. Sampson was also ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
Troy Sampson was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 13, 2019, and pleaded guilty on January 13, 2020. He was found to have knowingly failed to register and update his registration as a sex offender between April 5, 2019, and June 2, 2019.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuting the case.
The sentence is a result of Sampson's failure to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. The law requires sex offenders to register and update their registration with the authorities.
As a result of his sentence, Sampson was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
