PEORIA, IL – A Chillicothe, Illinois man is facing federal charges after allegedly torching the Peoria Planned Parenthood facility earlier this month. Tyler W. Massengill, 32, was arrested and charged with malicious use of fire and an explosive to damage, and attempt to damage, the building, according to a Department of Justice announcement.
The January 15th fire drew a swift response from the Peoria Fire Department, but not before significant damage was done. Investigators quickly turned to surveillance footage, which revealed a disturbing scene: an older white pickup truck with red doors pulling up near the clinic around 11:20 PM. The footage allegedly shows a man – now identified as Massengill – approaching the building with what appeared to be a laundry detergent bottle.
According to the criminal complaint, Massengill lit a rag stuffed into the bottle, smashed a window of the Planned Parenthood, and then tossed the flaming device inside before fleeing on foot. Law enforcement followed several leads, eventually linking the pickup truck to Massengill. The truck was discovered in Sparland, Illinois, where Massengill had allegedly asked someone to paint the doors white in an attempt to disguise it.
Facing mounting evidence, Massengill met with Peoria Police investigators on January 24th and was taken into custody. The FBI and ATF joined the investigation, piecing together the events of that night. Federal prosecutors are now handling the case, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald L. Hanna and Trial Attorney Erin Monju of the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section.
If convicted of the malicious use of fire charge, Tyler W. Massengill faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and could receive up to 40 years behind bars. He also faces up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details may emerge as the case progresses.
It’s crucial to remember that these are merely allegations at this stage, and Massengill is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments. The Peoria Police Department, FBI Springfield Field Office, and ATF Chicago Field Division all contributed to the investigation.
