Tyrelle Smiley, Post Office Burglary, Nebraska 2024

A brazen break-in at the Rockville, Nebraska Post Office has resulted in a 26-year-old Kearney man being sentenced to prison.

On November 17, 2019, two individuals broke into the U.S. Post Office branch in Rockville, Nebraska, stealing items that were being mailed, U.S. currency belonging to the Post Office, and coils of postal stamps.

When U.S. Postal employees arrived at work on Monday, November 18, they discovered the damage and reported the crime to authorities.

A thorough investigation led by the United States Postal Inspection Service uncovered evidence linking Tyrelle Smiley, 26, of Kearney, Nebraska, to the crime.

Smiley eventually confessed to entering the post office and a search of his apartment turned up some of the stolen property, including a coil of stamps with his fingerprints on it.

Smiley was originally sentenced to 30 months' imprisonment on June 28, 2023, but a mistake in the sentencing calculation was discovered on appeal, resulting in the case being remanded for resentencing.

On June 13, 2024, Senior United States District Court Judge John M. Gerrard resentenced Smiley to 22 months' imprisonment, with no parole available in the federal system.

After serving his prison term, Smiley will begin a 3-year term of supervised release.
