Published April 24, 2026

A federal jury has convicted a Newport News man of a series of armed bank robberies in Virginia, leaving the community shaken and demanding justice.

Tyrone K. Jefferson, 38, was found guilty of bank robbery, bank robbery with a dangerous weapon, brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to court records.

The crimes took place from February 4 to February 26, 2025, when Jefferson robbed a credit union and two banks using a stolen vehicle. During two of the robberies, Jefferson brandished a firearm, demanding that tellers fill a bag with money without dye or trackers.

Jefferson's previous felony convictions include assault of a federal employee, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of stolen property, and grand larceny, among others.

A federal district court judge will determine Jefferson's sentence on July 23, considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. The defendant faces a mandatory minimum of 21 years and up to life in prison.

The FBI's Norfolk Field Office investigated the case with assistance from the Henrico County Police Division and Newport News Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mack Coleman and Alyson C. Yates are prosecuting the case as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to repel the invasion of illegal immigration and protect communities from violent crime.

Jefferson's crimes have sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many to wonder how someone with a history of violent crime could commit such heinous acts. The conviction brings a measure of closure to the victims and their families, who have been left to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives.

As the case moves forward, the community remains vigilant, demanding justice and accountability for those who would seek to harm and exploit others.
