Federal Grand Jury Indicts Hopkinsville Man for Illegally Possessing a Firearm

In a move to crack down on gun violence, a federal grand jury in Paducah, Kentucky, has indicted Tyrone Poindexter, 42, of Hopkinsville, for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to the indictment, on February 13, 2024, Poindexter was found to be in possession of a Taurus .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol, which he was prohibited from possessing due to his previous felony convictions.

Poindexter's lengthy criminal history dates back to 2000, when he was convicted in Christian Circuit Court of complicity to first-degree manslaughter, complicity to first-degree robbery, and tampering with physical evidence on July 11, 2000.

He was also convicted in Christian Circuit Court of theft by unlawful taking – automobile, first degree criminal mischief, convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and first degree fleeing or evading police on June 11, 2013. Additionally, on October 18, 2017, Poindexter was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Poindexter made his initial court appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Western District of Kentucky on April 15, 2024, and was ordered detained pending trial. If convicted, Poindexter faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case is being investigated by the ATF Bowling Green Post of Duty and the Hopkinsville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Leigh Ann Dycus, of the U.S. Attorney’s Paducah Branch Office, is prosecuting this case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in the community.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
