Tyshawn Bush, Unlawful User of Marijuana in Possession of Firearms, Iowa 2015

A brazen act of gun ownership by a man with a history of marijuana use has led to a guilty plea in federal court. Tyshawn Bush, a 20-year-old from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, admitted to purchasing a firearm while falsely denying his illicit substance use.

The incident took place on June 27, 2015, when Bush bought a Savage Arms, 12 gauge shotgun in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Unbeknownst to the seller, Bush was a regular unlawful user of marijuana at the time of the purchase.

On July 16, 2015, Cedar Rapids police officers pulled over a vehicle, and Bush, who was a passenger, revealed a loaded Lorcin .25 caliber pistol with an obliterated serial number in the back seat. In the trunk, officers found a Westernfield 16 gauge shotgun, which Bush claimed as his own.

Bush, a resident of Cedar Rapids, faces a possible maximum sentence of ten years in prison, a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney C.J. Williams, with the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of the Safe Streets Task Force conducting the investigation.

Tyshawn Bush, a Cedar Rapids man, has pleaded guilty to being an unlawful user of marijuana in possession of firearms. Bush, who remains in the custody of the United States Marshal, will face sentencing after a presentence report is prepared.
