Sioux City Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Illegal Firearm Possession

Valon Jackson Jr., a 40-year-old Sioux City man, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm. The sentence was handed down on November 5, 2025 by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.

The charges against Jackson stem from a series of reckless driving incidents on June 19, 2024. A concerned citizen reported a speeding vehicle, later identified as Jackson's, driving through residential neighborhoods with no headlights on. Officers attempted to stop Jackson, but he accelerated at a high rate of speed, evading police. Jackson's vehicle eventually became incapacitated, and he fled on foot, but was apprehended a short distance away.

During the arrest, officers found Jackson to be under the influence of alcohol, with blood-shot and watery eyes. A search of the vehicle revealed marijuana, cocaine, and multiple items of drug paraphernalia. A firearm was also found, which bore Jackson's fingerprints.

Jackson has a history of violence, including a 2023 arson conviction and a 2011 federal conviction for possession of a firearm by a felon. In the 2011 case, Jackson ambushed his victim, firing multiple shots and hitting them once. This history of violence and his repeat offenses led to the stiff sentence.

Jackson must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. He is currently being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was investigated by the Sioux City, Iowa Police Department and the United States Department of Justice's Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case. The case file number is 24-4084.
