Verinda Red Legs, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, South Dakota 2014

A 30-year-old woman from Little Eagle, South Dakota, was sentenced for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. Verinda Red Legs, 30, was sentenced to 18 months in custody and 2 years of supervised release.

According to the court records, Red Legs was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 14, 2013. She pleaded guilty on May 12, 2014.

The conviction stems from an incident on October 18, 2013, when Red Legs got into an argument with her husband, the victim, at their home. Red Legs chased the victim around the house and stabbed him in the abdomen. She then fled the area and law enforcement was called.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, investigated the incident.

Red Legs was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. She was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The incident highlights the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help when needed. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, there are resources available to help.

The court's decision sends a strong message that violence will not be tolerated. We hope that Red Legs will receive the help she needs to change her behavior and become a productive member of society.
