Victor Diroggiero, Treasury Check Cashing And Stolen Identity Scheme, Florida 2009
A shocking scheme to cash over one hundred stolen United States Department of Treasury checks was brought to an end when Victor Diroggiero, 45, of Miami, was sentenced to 101 months in prison.
According to court documents, between April and August 2009, Diroggiero cashed the checks at a local check cashing store, Fast Cash Check Cashing, in North Miami. The checks were social security checks, thrift savings program checks, and tax refund checks issued to different real persons who did not authorize Diroggiero to possess the checks.
The defendant, who previously pled guilty to one count of theft of government money and one count of aggravated identity theft, was ordered to pay $745,000 in restitution.
Diroggiero's scheme caused significant financial harm to the victims of his crimes, who were left without access to their hard-earned funds. The sentence handed down in this case reflects the severity of the defendant's crimes and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
The investigation into Diroggiero's activities was led by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) and the United States Secret Service (USSS). The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan E. Kobrinski, Monique Botero, Kurt Lunkenheimer, and Robert Watson.
The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida commended the investigative efforts of the IRS-CI and USSS, who worked tirelessly to bring this case to justice.
