Assault in Eagle Butte: Local Man Faces Serious Charges

Vine Janis, a 40-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been indicted on assault charges after allegedly attacking a victim with a knife on December 20, 2020.

Janis was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The Indictment alleges that Janis assaulted an individual with a knife in Eagle Butte on December 20, 2020, resulting in serious bodily injury to the victim. The charges are merely accusations, and Janis is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller is prosecuting the case. Janis was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.

Janis was indicted on March 9, 2021, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on March 24, 2021, pled not guilty to the Indictment.
