Walter Sytnik, Mail Fraud, New Jersey 2024
CAMDEN, N.J. - In a shocking case of betrayal, a doctor was sentenced to 24 months in prison for defrauding his former employer's medical practice out of more than $500,000. Walter Sytnik, 35, of Voorhees, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud.
According to court documents, Sytnik worked as a bookkeeper for the medical practice in southern New Jersey before attending medical school. He used his position to steal checks from the practice and forged the doctor's signature to pay his own personal expenses, including credit card bills.
Sytnik's scheme went on for nearly five years, from May 2013 to April 2018, during which he stole over $500,000 from the practice. He even went so far as to reorder new checks when he ran out, allowing him to continue the fraud.
In addition to the prison term, Judge Joseph H. Rodriguez also ordered Sytnik to pay restitution of $415,995. The judge imposed the sentence by videoconference.
U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited the FBI's South Jersey Resident Agency and the Voorhees Township Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.
The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Diana Vondra Carrig. Sytnik is now set to begin serving his sentence.
