Rapid City Man Sentenced for Unregistered Firearm

Warren Hotchkiss, a 39-year-old man from Rapid City, South Dakota, was sentenced to time served, 2 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on February 25, 2020.

Hotchkiss was convicted of Possession of an Unregistered Firearm and was found to have unlawfully possessed a short-barrel Weatherby, model PA 08 TR, 12 gauge pump action shotgun in March 2019 at Rapid City.

The investigation into Hotchkiss was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.

Project Safe Neighborhoods is a renewed focus on targeting violent criminals, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and local communities to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.

This case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Initiated by the Attorney General in the fall of 2019, Project Guardian draws upon the Department’s past successful programs to reduce gun violence.

Warren Hotchkiss, 39, was sentenced to time served, 2 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on February 25, 2020, for his crime of Possession of an Unregistered Firearm.
