According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle P. Rossi, Read used a social media application to lure the child into a meeting. However, he was intercepted on October 1, 2018, while on his way to meet the child.

Read was found to be in possession of condoms and candy, which he intended to give to the child. Additionally, he was found to have images of child pornography on his cell phone.

The defendant's actions sparked a swift investigation by the New York State Police, under the direction of Major Eric Laughton, and Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin Kelly.

William C. Read's sentencing is the result of the investigation. He was sentenced to serve 132 months in prison by Chief U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilance in protecting our children. The New York State Police and Department of Homeland Security are to be commended for their tireless efforts in bringing Read to justice.
