Counterfeit Currency Ring Smashed in Scranton
A 28-year-old East Stroudsburg man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for passing counterfeit United States currency on numerous occasions.
William Daquan Battle, of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani on June 3, 2021, to 18 months' imprisonment followed by a 2-year term of supervised release, for passing counterfeit United States currency.
According to Acting United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, on diverse dates in November and December of 2018, Battle passed or attempted to pass over $2,000 in counterfeit currency at Walmart Supercenters located in East Stroudsburg and Mount Pocono, PA.
Battle engaged in this conduct at a time when he was still serving a prior federal sentence for a handgun offense and was required to reside in a halfway house in Brooklyn, New York.
The matter was investigated by the United States Secret Service (U.S.S.S.). Assistant United States Attorney Jeffery St John prosecuted the case.
With this sentence, the community is safer knowing that a man who would pass counterfeit currency will be behind bars for a time. Battle's actions not only hurt local businesses but also undermine the trust in our financial system.
Battle's case is a prime example of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in preventing and detecting financial crimes.
The United States Secret Service and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania will continue to work together to combat financial crimes in our community.
