William R. Murphy, Sexual Abuse of Teen, Missouri 2024

Published April 29, 2026

A 41-year-old man from Washington County, Missouri has been sentenced to 29 years in prison for the sexual abuse of a teenager and soliciting child sexual abuse material.

William R. Murphy was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Cristian M. Stevens on Wednesday, according to a statement from the FBI.

Murphy engaged in sexual contact with a juvenile when she was between the ages of 13 and 17, and in some cases, he threatened the victim to take sexually explicit photos of herself.

Murphy pleaded guilty in January in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to one count of production of child pornography and one count of coercion and enticement of a minor.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the federal government.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jillian Anderson is prosecuting the case.

Parents must remain vigilant and engaged, setting clear expectations and monitoring their child’s online activity to help keep them safe, according to Special Agent in Charge Chris Crocker of the FBI St. Louis Division.

The case highlights the importance of trusting instincts and taking action to protect children from predators.

Murphy will spend 29 years in prison for his crimes, and his case serves as a reminder of the need for continued efforts to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
