Willie Jamal Reynolds, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Louisiana 2017

LAFAYETTE, La. - An Opelousas man has been sentenced to four years and three months in prison for possessing a firearm despite being a convicted felon.

Willie Jamal Reynolds, 28, of Opelousas, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote to 57 months in prison for one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Along with the prison sentence, Reynolds was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Reynolds was arrested on June 3, 2017, after police found a Smith and Wesson .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol in his possession.

Further investigation by the ATF and the Opelousas Police Department revealed a 15-minute video online showing Reynolds and a friend in the presence of numerous firearms.

Reynolds was convicted of a felony in September 2013 and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safe.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Dominic Rossetti prosecuted the case.

The investigation was conducted by the ATF and the Opelousas Police Department.
