Chinese Citizen Sentenced for Stolen Property in New York
ALBANY, NEW YORK – Wu Feng Zhang, a 54-year-old Chinese citizen residing in the Town of Colonie, New York, was sentenced to 25 months in prison for transporting stolen property across state lines. United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Matthew Scarpino, Special Agent in Charge of the Buffalo Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), made the announcement.
According to court documents, Wu Feng Zhang stole merchandise from home improvement stores in various states, including Pennsylvania, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and New York, and transported those stolen items to his residence in Colonie.
As part of his prior guilty plea, Wu Feng Zhang admitted to stealing merchandise between June and December 2022. On January 11, 2023, HSI searched his residence and found about $100,000 in merchandise stolen from home improvement stores.
Chief United States District Judge Brenda K. Sannes imposed a 3-year term of post-imprisonment supervised release, ordered Wu Feng Zhang to pay $296,881.92 in restitution to the two home improvement store chains from which he stole, and ordered forfeiture of $3,257.76 seized from two bank accounts.
HSI, with assistance from the Colonie Police Department, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, and the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Wentworth-Ping prosecuted the case.
The investigation revealed that Wu Feng Zhang's actions caused significant financial losses to the home improvement store chains. The restitution order aims to compensate the victims for the losses incurred due to Wu Feng Zhang's actions.
Wu Feng Zhang's sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of transporting stolen property across state lines. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in investigating and prosecuting such crimes.
