Zachary Ronzell Mitchell, Interfere with Commerce by Threats and Violence – Hobbs Act Robbery, North Dakota 2019

FARGO, N.D. – A violent string of robberies came to an end for a 30-year-old Fargo man, who was sentenced to six years in federal prison for his role in the crimes.

Zachary Ronzell Mitchell, 30, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Peter D. Welte to 72 months in federal prison for Interfere with Commerce by Threats and Violence – Hobbs Act Robbery. Mitchell was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment.

The violent robberies occurred on June 6, 2019, when Mitchell and a group of young males and one female robbed a customer of commercial sex. The victim had arranged to meet an individual for the purpose of commercial sex at an apartment building in Fargo just after midnight.

Using dangerous weapons, Mitchell and his co-defendants robbed the commercial sex customer by threats of force and actual force. Fortunately, the victim called 911 immediately following the robbery, allowing law enforcement to apprehend the suspects.

Mitchell’s co-defendants were also involved in the violent robberies. Several of them have pleaded guilty to related charges and received sentences ranging from two to seven years in federal prison.

The case was investigated by the Fargo Police Department and the Homeland Security Investigation. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s office, with Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Puhl assigned to the case.

Mitchell’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent crime in our community. The Fargo Police Department and the United States Attorney’s office will continue to work together to bring those responsible for violent crimes to justice.
