Washington D.C. – The shadow of a presidential pardon looms over the justice system as former President George W. Bush granted early release to two Texas felons convicted in high-profile cases of firearms-related violence and civil rights abuses.
José Alonso Compean, sentenced to 12 years for assault with a dangerous weapon and aiding and abetting serious bodily injury, will have his prison sentence terminated early on March 20, 2009. His fine and supervised release remain in effect.
Ignacio Ramos Jr., also from Texas, faces a similar fate. Ramos, who was sentenced to 11 years and one day for the same charges as Compean, will leave prison a year early on the same date, under Bush’s commutation.
The lenient action has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that it undermines the justice system’s integrity and rewards those involved in dangerous crimes. Both men were convicted of deprivation of rights under color of law, 18 USC § 242, a federal crime involving civil rights violations.
