A brutal attack on a US Postal Service letter carrier shook a South Buffalo neighborhood last September. On the evening of September 9, 2025, Jacob D. Ortiz, 34, of Buffalo, NY, allegedly lunged at the USPS worker, tackling them to the ground and pummeling their face and head with his fists.

The victim, who was just doing their job, suffered a bump on the back of the head, several contusions, bruises, and scrapes. Ortiz continued to assault the victim, forcing them to flee for their safety. The attacker gave chase, but the victim managed to escape.

Ortiz’s attack on the postal worker has left the community shaken. The assault highlights the dangers faced by federal employees, including mail carriers, who put their lives on the line every day to deliver essential services.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Colleen M. McCarthy praised the bravery of the victim, stating that the attack was ‘unprovoked and without warning.’ Ortiz’s guilty plea marks a significant step towards justice, but the community will be watching to see the severity of his punishment.
