California Man Sentenced to 12 Years for Meth Conspiracy
In a major blow to the narcotics trade in central Mississippi, a California man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a large-scale methamphetamine conspiracy. Walter Pernillo, 42, of San Bernardino, California, was handed a 151-month prison term by U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III on Friday, April 22, 2016.
Pernillo’s sentence also includes five years of supervised release following his prison term. His conviction stems from an extensive investigation dubbed Operation Yeti Ice, which targeted illegal narcotics distribution in the region. A grand jury indicted Pernillo for his role in the conspiracy, which involved the possession with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of actual methamphetamine.
The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, involved a wide range of law enforcement agencies. These included the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Leake County Sherriff’s Office, Madison County Sherriff’s Office, United States Postal Service, Internal Revenue Service, Carthage Police Department, Forest Police Department, Newton County Sherriff’s Office, Lauderdale County Sherriff’s Office, Decatur Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Richland Police Department, Pearl Police Department, Ridgeland Police Department, Jackson Police Department, and the United States Marshal Service.
Operation Yeti Ice was a major undertaking that brought together multiple agencies to tackle the growing problem of narcotics distribution in central Mississippi. The investigation and subsequent indictment of Pernillo and others involved in the conspiracy demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement to disrupting and dismantling organized crime groups.
While the sentence handed down to Pernillo may seem severe, it serves as a deterrent to others who would seek to engage in similar activities. It is a stark reminder that those who engage in narcotics trafficking will face the full weight of the law.
The sentencing of Pernillo marks a significant victory for law enforcement in the fight against narcotics trafficking. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the agencies involved in Operation Yeti Ice, and a reminder that those who engage in criminal activity will be held accountable.
In a statement, U.S. Gregory K. Davis praised the efforts of the agencies involved in the investigation, saying that their work had ‘dismantled a significant narcotics trafficking organization.’ He added that the sentence handed down to Pernillo would ‘serve as a warning to others who would seek to engage in similar activities.’
