The federal government is pushing back against what it calls mainstream media misinformation about conditions at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, a facility designed to house immigrant families awaiting deportation proceedings.
ICE Director Todd M. Lyons emphasized that the Dilley facility is not a punitive institution but rather a purpose-built residential center where families receive comprehensive care while in federal custody. The facility, which operates at taxpayer expense, provides medical services, educational programs, and basic necessities to detainees.
Medical care at the facility includes comprehensive screenings within 12 hours of arrival, with pediatric assessments covering growth, developmental, behavioral, and nutritional evaluations. Medical professionals conduct full assessments within 48 working hours, providing priority care for children, pregnant women, and medically vulnerable residents. The facility employs a full medical staff including physicians, nurses, psychologists, and mental health coordinators.
Educational services for children include access to teachers, classrooms, and curriculum materials for math, reading, and spelling. The facility provides age-appropriate books, toys, and outdoor activities. Infant care packages contain formula, baby food, bottles, diapers, wipes, and hygiene items, with cribs and sippy cups also available.
Security measures include medical isolation rooms for contagious illnesses and quarantine situations, with efforts made to keep families together during medical separations. The facility maintains 24/7 access to medical professionals, with referrals to outside specialists or hospitals when necessary. All licensed providers hold current, active, and unrestricted licenses in Texas.
According to ICE officials, many detainees receive their first comprehensive health screening while in custody, with some experiencing medical care for the first time in their lives. The agency maintains that the Dilley facility represents the best healthcare many illegal aliens have received, emphasizing that detention serves the purpose of deportation rather than punishment.
