Atlanta, May 3, 1944 – The Supreme Court’s landmark decision broadening ballot privileges for Negros in Georgia and Texas has left many wondering if they’ve truly gained a foothold in the democratic process. At Booker T. Washington High School, Professor M.J. Beavers led a class in balloting procedures, but even he couldn’t shake off the doubts of his students. ‘We look upon the decision as an achievement, but have we really gained anything?’ Beavers asked his class of 4000 students, named after the famous Negro leader.
