In a scathing rebuke to the Alexandria School Board, Councilman John J. Ewald warned that he may oppose new school construction unless they endorse a compulsory attendance law. Ewald’s bold move came as he decried the city’s failure to address the growing problem of truancy in Alexandria. ‘Today, we see children who should be in school walking the streets, and no city authority can do anything about it,’ Ewald fumed.
