December 6, 1922 – In a brazen daylight robbery, a group of street bandits left a trail of destruction and fear in their wake, making off with a whopping $20,000 in cash. The daring heist took place on Berg Avenue and Fifth Street in West New York, a normally tranquil neighborhood that was thrown into chaos as the thieves struck.
A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, described the scene as ‘terrified’ as the robbers, armed with nothing but their wits and a black bag, set about their business. The bandits, who were seen fleeing the scene in an automobile, were described as being in high spirits, laughing and joking as they sped away from the crime scene.
The robbery was perpetrated against John I. Conroy, a well-known figure in the area, who was making a regular trip to the company’s fund at the Campania of New Jersey. Conroy, a former police official, was seen entering the company’s office with his black bag and was subsequently ambushed by the thieves as he sat at his desk.
The two men, described as being ‘in their mid-30s’, were seen beating Conroy into unconsciousness before turning their attention to the banknotes and cash in his possession. The sheer audacity of the heist left police baffled, as it was clear that the robbers had done their homework, knowing exactly when and where to strike.
Police from two states joined forces to track down the fleeing robbers, but a description of the vehicle or its occupants has yet to be released. The investigation is ongoing, with police scouring the area for any clues that may lead them to the perpetrators of this brazen crime.
As the people of West New York struggle to come to terms with the reality of this daylight robbery, one thing is clear: the streets of this once-peaceful neighborhood will never be the same again.
