In a shocking case of identity theft, Fernando Nevarez-Carreon, a 61-year-old Mexican national and lawful permanent resident of the United States, has been sentenced to one year in federal prison for using a forged Social Security card.
Nevarez-Carreon, who resides in Dyersville, Iowa, was on the run from federal court in Nebraska after failing to appear for sentencing in July 2015. He was later arrested at his place of employment in Farley, Iowa, in March 2017.
According to court documents, Nevarez-Carreon used a Social Security card knowing that it was forged or unlawfully obtained. He also admitted to using a false name and Social Security number to obtain a job in Farley, Iowa, in July 2016.
Nevarez-Carreon has a lengthy criminal history, including a 1999 conviction for domestic battery in Cook County, Illinois, and convictions in 2004 and 2005 for driving under the influence in Dodge County, Nebraska.
His wife, Rosa Nevarez-Fallad, was also sentenced in February 2018 to three months’ imprisonment for her role in the identity theft scheme.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, and the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations.
Nevarez-Carreon is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison to serve his 12-month sentence, to be served consecutively to the Nebraska sentence. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
