Feds Forced to Fund NYC Transit Security After Legal Beatdown
NEW YORK – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) just got a harsh lesson in legal accountability. A federal court today ordered DHS to immediately release $33,898,500 in critical anti-terrorism funding earmarked for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), money the feds tried to strong-arm away from New York.
Attorney General Letitia James and Governor Kathy Hochul spearheaded the legal fight, suing the administration on September 30th after DHS slashed New York’s Transit Security Grant Program (TSGP) allocation to zero. The move, widely seen as retaliation for New York’s “sanctuary” policies protecting immigrant rights, was deemed unlawful by U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
“This ruling protecting critical counterterrorism funding is a victory for every New Yorker who rides our subways, buses, and commuter rails,” James and Hochul stated in a joint release. “A court has once again affirmed that this administration cannot punish New York by arbitrarily wiping out critical security resources and defunding law enforcement that keeps riders safe.”
The funds are intended to bolster security measures across the vast MTA network, including increased surveillance, enhanced security personnel, and critical infrastructure upgrades. DHS’s attempt to withhold the money left the system vulnerable and sent a chilling message about federal overreach, sources within the MTA told Grimy Times.
The court’s decision is a significant blow to the administration’s attempts to weaponize federal funding to enforce immigration policies. While DHS hasn’t commented on the ruling beyond a brief statement acknowledging the court’s decision, legal experts say this case sets a dangerous precedent, potentially opening the door to further lawsuits from states resisting federal pressure tactics.
This isn’t just about money; it’s about safety and principle. New York stood its ground against federal bullying, and the result is a more secure transit system for millions of commuters. Attorney General James vowed to continue fighting to ensure New York receives the resources it deserves, no matter the political games being played in Washington. “We will always fight to ensure that New York gets the resources we need to support our law enforcement and keep people safe,” she said.
