New York – In a groundbreaking move to protect the welfare of millions, New York Attorney General Letitia James has secured a court victory against the Trump administration’s attempt to dismantle social services in 21 states. The ruling grants a preliminary injunction, halting the implementation of new rules that threatened to defund crucial programs such as Head Start, family planning clinics, and food banks.
“The Trump administration tried to rip apart the very programs that millions of families rely on,” James stated. “Today’s ruling makes clear that their unlawful and cruel policies will not stand.”
The injunction came after a lawsuit led by Attorney General James, joined by 20 other states, challenged the federal government’s reinterpretation of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA). The Trump administration’s abrupt reversal would have required states to verify immigration status for services, potentially leading to catastrophic funding losses.
The court’s decision recognizes that the administration violated the Administrative Procedure Act by issuing new mandates without proper rulemaking. This victory preserves vital services in New York, including:
- Head Start: Protects early education for over 43,000 children.
- Community Health Centers: Safeguards access to primary and preventive care for 2.4 million New Yorkers.
- Title X Clinics: Ensures reproductive health services for more than 300,000 patients annually.
- Mental Health Programs: Preserves over $65 million in annual funding for crisis intervention and support programs.
The coalition includes attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.
