New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched a probe into the mysterious death of Bernie Russo, who met his demise on July 1st following an encounter with New York State Police (NYSP) troopers in Norfolk, St. Lawrence County.
The grim incident unfolded early morning when state troopers responded to a reported domestic incident at a Norfolk residence. Upon their arrival, they encountered Mr. Russo emerging from an RV on the property. In the tense situation that followed, troopers attempted to subdue Mr. Russo, applying handcuffs and leg restraints. Tragically, during this struggle, Mr. Russo became unresponsive. Troopers immediately initiated life-saving measures as they awaited the arrival of emergency medical personnel. Despite their best efforts, Mr. Russo was pronounced dead on the scene.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is mandated to assess every incident where a police officer or peace officer may have caused the death of an individual by act or omission, regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty, and whether the deceased was armed or unarmed. In this case, OSI is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Russo’s demise.
