In a bid to stem the tide of illicit liquor flowing into East St. Louis, the local Prohibition Unit has been relentless in its pursuit of bootleggers. Figures released by the unit reveal a staggering increase in seized liquor, with 167,2744 gallons confiscated in 1925 alone. This represents a four-fold jump from the 457,365 gallons seized in 1923. While some might argue that the amount of liquor in circulation has increased, the Prohibition Unit’s numbers suggest a proportional increase in seizures.
