Child pornography distribution and receipt have landed one Iowa man in federal prison for five years. Adam Stephenson, age 20, of Otho, Iowa, was sentenced on March 7, 2013, for his role in these heinous crimes.
Stephenson pleaded guilty on September 27, 2012, to one count of distributing child pornography and one count of receiving child pornography. At the guilty plea, Stephenson admitted he knowingly used the Internet to distribute and receive child pornography, a disturbing trend that has seen a rise in recent years.
The sentencing took place in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Stephenson was sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment, a significant term that reflects the severity of his crimes. In addition to the prison term, a special assessment of $200 was imposed, and Stephenson must also serve a five-year term of supervised release.
As part of his sentence, Stephenson must comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements. This is a crucial aspect of ensuring public safety and preventing further crimes of this nature. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, the Fort Dodge Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
