GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Sioux City’s Johnnie Hawkins has entered a guilty plea in federal court for the armed bank heist that left Heritage Bank at 4530 Singing Hills Blvd. holding $5,954 less than it did on November 10, 2012.
Hawkins, aged 27, from Sioux City, Iowa, was previously convicted of Burglary in 2004 and now faces a heavy sentence for his brazen act. He threatened a bank teller with a loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun and walked off with the cash, while also distributing illegal drugs in the city throughout the fall of 2012.
The case has been a collaborative effort between the Sioux City, Iowa, Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild is handling the prosecution, and sentencing will be set after the presentence report is prepared by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett.
Hawkins remains in custody, facing a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
