SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – In a stunning revelation of cyberexploitation and child abuse, Ronald J. Richards, 59, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for his heinous acts of distributing and possessing child pornography. United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian announced the sentence, which also includes a mandatory 20 years of supervised release following his release from custody.
The sentence, imposed by United States District Judge David N. Hurd, consists of concurrent 20-year terms for two counts of distributing child pornography and consecutive 10-year sentences on four counts of receiving and possessing child pornography. Richards will also be required to register as a sex offender.
Richards’ downfall began when an investigation by the United States Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, unearthed his involvement in trading child pornography over the internet. Agents discovered that Richards had been using his email account to trade explicit images with individuals across the country, including two men who produced the content they shared.
However, the investigation took a darker turn when agents uncovered that Richards had engaged in sexually explicit chats and solicited illicit images from two minor female children, aged 15 and 13. The chilling details of the case revealed that over 3,700 images and 48 video files depicting child abuse, including some as young as one and three years old, were recovered from his possessions.
Assistant United States Attorney Lisa Fletcher, Project Safe Childhood Coordinator for the Northern District of New York, led the prosecution against Richards. Project Safe Childhood is a federal initiative that leverages resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who exploit children online and identify victims for rescue.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of child exploitation on the internet and the determination of law enforcement to protect our most vulnerable citizens.
