Willie James Hallmark, a resident of Adair County, Oklahoma, was today meted out a severe sentence for his heinous act of assault with intent to commit murder in Indian Country. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced that Hallmark, 37, will spend 96 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
The crime stems from an investigation spearheaded by the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service and the FBI. Hallmark was indicted in June 2013 and pleaded guilty to his charges in December of the same year.
Pursuant to the indictment, on or around June 6, 2013, Hallmark, described as an Indian, committed a brutal assault on two individuals, causing them injuries by stabbing them with a knife. His motive was alleged to be the intent to commit murder while on land held in trust for a member of the Cherokee Nation.
The sentencing hearing was presided over by The Honorable Ronald A. White, District Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee. Hallmark will be transported to the designated federal prison where he will serve his nonparolable sentence.
Representing the United States during the proceedings was Assistant United States Attorney Dean Burris. Hallmark remains in the custody of the United States Marshal Service until transportation arrangements are finalized.
This sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the severity of violence in Indian Country, and the relentless efforts by federal law enforcement to uphold justice and protect communities.
