The grimy streets of Toledo are a step closer to peace as Stanley L. Haythorne, 37, has been named in a 15-count indictment for his alleged role in a massive marijuana distribution ring. According to the Department of Justice, Haythorne is accused of conspiring with others to distribute over 1,000 kilograms of pot between 2004 and the present.

In June 2010, the feds caught Haythorne with more than 150 pounds of the green stuff, but that was just a snippet of his sinister scheme. The indictment also reveals a five-month period in 2008 where Haythorne engaged in $250,000 worth of financial transactions to skirt reporting requirements.

Haythorne’s fate now hinges on the courts, as sentencing will be determined by factors like his criminal history and role in the crime. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas P. Weldon is handling the case, which was a result of a joint FBI-IRS-DEA investigation.

The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) has been hard at work on this one, ensuring that the most sophisticated resources are directed against large-scale drug trafficking ventures like Haythorne’s.

Despite the grim charges, it’s important to remember that an indictment is not evidence of guilt. Haythorne will have his day in court, where the government must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
