Heroin Ring Busted: Eight Face Life in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A major heroin distribution network operating in Allegheny County has been dismantled, with eight individuals now facing federal charges that could send them away for life. The indictment, unsealed today, marks the culmination of a lengthy investigation into a large-scale drug operation that flooded the streets with deadly narcotics.

The United States Attorney’s Office announced the indictment of Eric Ewell, 30; Canaan Bey, 26; William Fielder, 30; Terrious Harper, 29; Khalid Kareem, 29; Donnell Morris, 28; Donnie Morris, 29; and Brandon Thompson, 31, all formerly or currently residing in Allegheny County. They stand accused of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin, a charge carrying a hefty penalty.

According to the indictment, the alleged conspiracy spanned from January 2011 to June 2012. The feds claim the group worked together to move significant quantities of heroin throughout the region. Specifically, Donnell Morris and Donnie Morris are accused of attempting to possess with intent to distribute another kilogram or more of the drug on June 27 and 28, 2012.

Federal prosecutors aren’t just after prison time. They’re seeking to seize assets allegedly gained through the illegal operation – a staggering $1.2 million in heroin trafficking proceeds, a luxury Porsche automobile, and a Pittsburgh residence. This is a clear message: crime doesn’t pay, and the government will come for your ill-gotten gains.

If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum total sentence of at least 10 years and up to life in prison, alongside a potential fine of up to $10,000,000. However, Assistant United States Attorney Craig W. Haller, prosecuting the case, noted that actual sentencing will depend on the severity of the offenses and the defendants’ criminal histories.

The takedown was a joint effort involving the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) offices in Pittsburgh, New York, and Charlotte, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Pittsburgh Police Department, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, the Allegheny County Police Department, the Wilkins Township Police Department, the East Pittsburgh Police Department, the New York Police Department, and the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office. It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is simply an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
