BUFFALO, N.Y. – Luis Aguilar Torres, a 35-year-old citizen of the United Kingdom and Ecuador, has pleaded guilty to reentering the United States following his conviction for an aggravated felony. This admission comes before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo and carries a potential sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott S. Allen Jr. revealed that Torres attempted to cross the border from Canada into the U.S. via the Rainbow Bridge on September 19, 2016. His attempted entry was thwarted when authorities discovered he had been convicted of murder in Queens County, NY back in June 2000.
According to Allen, Torres stood accused of murder-2nd degree and robbery 1st degree. In January 2002, the defendant pleaded guilty to the robbery charge and was sentenced to five years in prison. Following his release, he was deported from the United States and subjected to a lifetime ban.
The successful investigation into Torres’s reentry was led by Director of Field Operations Rose Hilmey of United States Customs and Border Protection.
Sentencing for this serious offense is scheduled for February 7, 2017, at 9:30 a.m. The defendant now awaits the outcome of his case before Judge Vilardo.
