Columbus Man Indicted for Aiding ISIL

Columbus man Aaron Travis Daniels, 20, aka Harun Muhammad, aka Abu Yusef, has been indicted on two federal counts of attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a designated foreign terrorist organization. The charges, returned by a federal grand jury, expose a chilling effort by a young Ohio man to funnel resources and himself directly into a global terror network.

Count one alleges Daniels sent $250 in January 2016 to an active ISIL operative, a direct financial boost to a regime known for atrocities. The second count is more damning — he allegedly attempted to join ISIL as personnel, traveling as far as attempting to leave Columbus on November 7 with Libya as his intended destination. FBI agents and Joint Terrorism Task Force units intercepted him before he could cross international borders.

U.S. Attorney Benjamin C. Glassman of the Southern District of Ohio confirmed the indictment alongside Angela L. Byers, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cincinnati Division. They emphasized the collaborative work of the Southern Ohio Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), which includes federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies working in tandem to disrupt homegrown terror threats before they escalate.

Daniels has been in federal custody since his arrest. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison on each count — a maximum of 40 years behind bars. While Congress sets the statutory maximums, actual sentencing will be determined by Chief U.S. District Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr., who will preside over the case. For now, Daniels remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

The Southern Ohio JTTF, credited with the investigation, includes personnel from the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Columbus Division of Police, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, The Ohio State University Police Department, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, John Glenn International Airport Police, Westerville Police, and Columbus Division of Fire. Their reach underscores the layered response to domestic terrorism threats.

Prosecution is led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica W. Knight, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Gibson from Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien’s Office, and Trial Attorneys Michael Dittoe and Taryn Meeks of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. The case continues to unfold under the scrutiny of national security authorities.
