Mexican drug lord Roberto Ponce-Rocha, 55, is back on American soil — not as a shadowy kingpin evading justice, but as a federal defendant in handcuffs. Ponce-Rocha was extradited from Colombia and arrived in the Southern District of New York yesterday, facing charges tied to a sprawling international narcotics ring that flooded the U.S. with thousands of kilograms of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. His capture marks a major strike in a DEA-led operation that has spanned continents since 2013.
Ponce-Rocha was arrested by Colombian authorities on March 20, 2016, after years of orchestrating drug shipments from South America to the United States and beyond. Prosecutors allege he used commercial shipments, drivers, and couriers to move narcotics across the U.S.-Mexico border and from Colombia to global markets. As a leader of the conspiracy, he allegedly coordinated the importation of at least five kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of heroin, and 500 grams of methamphetamine — quantities that carry a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life behind bars.
He was presented today in Manhattan federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein. The case is now assigned to U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman. The charges stem from a Superseding Indictment that also ensnares two Colombian co-conspirators, Juan Caicedo-Zuniga and Adan Munoz-Cordoba, who were extradited from Panama on May 24, 2016. Both are accused of facilitating narcotics transactions under Ponce-Rocha’s direction.
“As alleged, Roberto Ponce-Rocha was for years a leader of a drug trafficking organization that moved thousands of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia to countries around the world, including to the United States,” said Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of the DEA and its international counterparts, Ponce-Rocha will now face justice in a United States court.”
DEA Special Agent in Charge William R. Sherman didn’t mince words: “The extradition of these alleged international drug traffickers sends a clear message to those who are thinking about endangering the citizens of our country with these potentially deadly drugs: your greed will get you an all expenses paid trip to the United States and a nice long stay in a federal detention facility.”
The investigation, led by the DEA’s San Diego Division and supported by Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the DEA Special Operations Division, has dismantled key trafficking routes and seized massive drug shipments. Ponce-Rocha’s prosecution underscores the federal government’s reach in cracking down on transnational cartels that fuel America’s opioid and stimulant crises.
