Jeremiah James Little Wounded, a 36-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been indicted on three counts of distributing methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance, in a case that underscores the ongoing drug crisis gripping rural tribal lands.
The federal grand jury returned the indictment on November 9, 2016, charging Little Wounded with distributing a mixture containing a detectable amount of meth on three separate dates—July 7, 18, and 22, 2016—all within the boundaries of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and/or a $1,000,000 fine.
Little Wounded appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Moreno on November 16, 2016, where he formally entered a plea of not guilty. He was released on bond as the case moves forward, though no trial date has yet been scheduled.
If convicted, Little Wounded also faces a lifetime of supervised release, mandatory payment of $300 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and possible restitution orders. The charges remain allegations; federal authorities emphasize he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The investigation was led by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, highlighting the collaboration between tribal authorities and federal prosecutors in tackling drug-related crime. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney SaraBeth Donovan.
With methamphetamine fueling addiction and violence across the Northern Plains, this indictment marks another front in the federal government’s push to stem the tide of narcotics flooding into vulnerable communities. Little Wounded’s case will be closely watched as a test of both tribal-federal cooperation and judicial deterrence.
