Armed Robber Williams Gets 15 Years

KANSAS CITY, MO – A brazen daylight robbery at a Bank Midwest branch on Ward Parkway landed Sidney A. Williams, 63, of Kansas City, a 15-year federal prison sentence. The sentence was handed down today by U.S. Chief District Judge Greg Kays, following Williams’ guilty plea on July 6, 2016.

The November 10, 2015, heist saw Williams enter the bank armed with a .38-caliber revolver, immediately ordering everyone to the floor. He didn’t hesitate to escalate, forcibly subduing the on-duty security guard and pointing the weapon at both the guard and the assistant branch manager. He then demanded cash, which two employees stuffed into a blue canvas grocery bag he carried.

But Williams’ escape didn’t go as planned. As he fled the bank with $5,493 in stolen funds, the security guard gave chase. A violent struggle erupted across the street, with Williams even leveling the gun at the guard before being disarmed with help from a quick-thinking passerby. The guard sustained minor injuries during the altercation.

“This wasn’t a sophisticated operation,” stated Tammy Dickinson, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. “It was a violent, desperate act that put lives at risk. The security guard’s bravery and the public’s assistance were crucial in bringing this dangerous individual to justice.”

Law enforcement recovered the stolen cash, the firearm, and a black ski mask used to conceal Williams’ identity at the scene. The case was a joint effort led by the FBI and the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick C. Edwards prosecuting the case. The 15-year sentence carries no possibility of parole, ensuring Williams will remain behind bars for the foreseeable future.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on other instances of violent crime plaguing the Midwest. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by bank employees and the courage of those who intervene in the face of danger.
