Tyrone Mobley Gets Prison for Shadyside Mail Heists

PITTSBURGH — Tyrone Mobley, 49, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is headed to federal prison after stealing dozens of mailed packages destined for Shadyside residents over a two-month crime spree in 2015. The conviction, for theft of mail, culminated in a 12-month-and-one-day sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Donetta W. Ambrose.

Federal prosecutors say Mobley targeted residential deliveries between October and November 2015, snatching packages straight from doorsteps after they were dropped off by the United States Postal Service. The thefts, concentrated in the upscale Shadyside neighborhood, included electronics, clothing, and personal goods — racking up losses totaling $2,350.27 in stolen property.

After an investigation led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and supported by the Department of Homeland Security, Mobley was identified, arrested, and later convicted on federal charges. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci, who emphasized the seriousness of tampering with the U.S. mail system.

Judge Ambrose not only imposed the 12-month-and-one-day prison term but also ordered three years of supervised release upon Mobley’s return to society. In addition, he must pay full restitution: $2,350.27, split among the victims whose packages vanished from porches and entryways.

Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song, overseeing the Western District of Pennsylvania, said the sentence sends a clear message: stealing from American mail carriers and residents won’t be treated as petty crime. “Interfering with the U.S. mail is a federal offense,” Song stated. “This prosecution proves we take it seriously.”

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, often dubbed the oldest federal law enforcement agency, continues to investigate hundreds of mail theft cases annually across Pennsylvania. With porch piracy on the rise, officials warn that even seemingly small thefts can trigger stiff federal penalties — as Tyrone Mobley now knows all too well.
