Dario Renteria-Garcia, Cocaine Smuggling, FL 2016

Dario Renteria-Garcia (41, Colombia, South America) is headed to federal prison for 18 years after admitting to running a transnational cocaine pipeline targeting the United States. The Colombian national was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore in Tampa, Florida, following a guilty plea entered on October 24, 2016, for conspiring to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine on a vessel under U.S. jurisdiction.

Between 2010 and 2013, Renteria-Garcia orchestrated a series of maritime drug runs, recruiting mariners to transport multi-ton loads of cocaine from Colombia through the eastern Pacific Ocean. In two key operations—one in September 2010 and another in January 2013—he deployed smugglers carrying massive shipments. Those vessels were intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard, resulting in the seizure of more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine before it could reach American shores.

Authorities say Renteria-Garcia didn’t just coordinate logistics—he handpicked crews, arranged vessels, and managed distribution chains from abroad. His role placed him deep inside a sophisticated drug network that exploited maritime routes to bypass border controls. The operation exemplifies the scale and daring of modern cartels using offshore smuggling corridors to flood the U.S. with narcotics.

Renteria-Garcia was apprehended in Colombia and held for extradition. The Office of International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Justice handled the legal transfer, bringing him to Florida to face federal charges. His arrest and prosecution are part of a broader push to dismantle high-level trafficking organizations operating beyond U.S. borders.

The investigation was led by the Panama Express Strike Force, a specialized Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) unit pooling resources from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and Joint Interagency Task Force South under U.S. Southern Command. The OCDETF program targets the most dangerous drug syndicates fueling the nation’s addiction crisis.

Assistant United States Attorney Christopher F. Murray prosecuted the case, securing a sentence that reflects the severity of Renteria-Garcia’s crimes. With 18 years behind bars, the message is clear: orchestrators of international drug smuggling will be hunted down, extradited, and punished to the fullest extent of U.S. law.
