Ernest Schaeffer Indicted on Meth, Gun Charges

Ernest Schaeffer, 40, of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, is facing federal charges after being indicted on multiple counts of methamphetamine trafficking and firearms possession tied to drug activity. The indictment, handed down January 17, 2017, by a federal grand jury in Scranton, marks a key arrest in a regional crackdown on violent drug networks.

According to U.S. Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Schaeffer allegedly conspired with others between June and October 2016 to distribute and possess with intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine. He is also charged with three separate counts of distribution and possession with intent to distribute the drug, amplifying the severity of the prosecution’s case.

Compounding the drug charges, Schaeffer faces three counts of possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking—a federal offense that carries steep mandatory minimums. Authorities say four weapons were tied to the drug operation, signaling escalation in both distribution capacity and potential for violence.

The indictment includes a forfeiture count targeting real property owned by Schaeffer, suggesting prosecutors are moving to dismantle the financial infrastructure of his alleged drug enterprise. Asset seizure remains a key tool in disrupting repeat offenders and organized narcotics operations.

The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Pennsylvania State Police, and Shenandoah Police, operating under the umbrella of the Violent Crime Reduction Partnership (VCRP). This federal-state initiative targets individuals who use firearms in violent or drug-related crimes across the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa is prosecuting the case. If convicted, Schaeffer faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years on the drug conspiracy charge and a consecutive five-year mandatory minimum on the gun count, with a potential maximum penalty of life in prison. All charges remain allegations; Schaeffer is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
